Sun Life's Play for Life: An Afternoon of Coffee, Board Games, and Financial Insights

Imagine an afternoon where financial lessons are served alongside your favorite cup of coffee, but with a twist—you’re not just listening to a lecture; you’re rolling dice and making life decisions on a board game. This was the scene at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL) in Ayala Malls Capitol Central, Bacolod. The event, aptly called “Coffee and Play,” brought together bloggers, OFWs, and Sun Life advisors for a session that turned financial literacy into an engaging and unforgettable experience.

More Than Just a Game

Here’s my experience playing Play for Life: A Game of Choices.

There’s a growing interest among younger generations in learning through board games, and Sun Life’s Play for Life taps into this trend. The game makes financial concepts engaging and approachable. Designed for specific groups—like employees, business owners, and OFWs—it turns financial planning into an interactive, fun activity. The challenges players encounter in the game mirror real-life situations, underscoring the importance of preparation.

This session in Bacolod marked the first leg of the Visayas tour. Sun Life has tested the game with clients, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many players didn’t even realize they were learning because they were so immersed in the game. It also revealed how participants might react to real-life financial scenarios, making it both entertaining and insightful.

Financial Literacy, Family Bonds, and Holiday Cheer

What made this event extra special was its exclusivity for OFWs and their families, many of whom were back home for the holidays. Held on November 30, 2024, at CBTL Ayala Bacolod, the session wasn’t just about playing a game—it was about bonding and creating meaningful memories.

Participants were warmly welcomed with smiles and a Shine Pinoy travel kit, a thoughtful touch for OFWs. After a quick registration, it was time to dive into the game.

Game On: A Fun and Eye-Opening Experience

From the moment the dice hit the table, the room buzzed with excitement. What began as a casual game quickly turned into a dynamic learning experience. Each roll brought players face-to-face with realistic scenarios that tested their financial acumen—from emergency expenses to investment opportunities. The objective was clear: tackle life’s obstacles, make informed decisions, and emerge with a secure financial footing.

The game reminded me of Monopoly, but with a twist. Instead of buying properties and collecting rent, Play for Life focuses on you—your decisions, your outcomes. For instance:

  • “Life Happens”: Players face emergency situations that can turn the tides of the game. It’s a stark reminder of how unpreparedness in real life can drain savings.
  • “Life Wins”: Players receive bonuses and must decide whether to invest, save, or buy protection like insurance.
  • “Life Choice”: Critical decisions shape the game’s outcome, reflecting real-life financial crossroads.

Adding to the excitement, the board included spaces like “Eat Out,” “Shopping,” and “Utilities,” where funds were deducted—a playful yet realistic nod to everyday expenses.

Voices from the Game

After the session, we interviewed a few participants. Jona, whose husband is an OFW, shared, “What I realized from this game is the importance of having another source of income. With insurance, it’s not just about paying; it’s about having something set aside for emergencies.”

Erika, whose mother works in Saudi Arabia, said, “Mas importante nga may life insurance ka. For example, in case of an emergency nga indi man ma full cover ang PhilHealth, dako ang mabulig sang Sun Life sa financial.” (It’s important to have life insurance. In case of an emergency that PhilHealth can’t fully cover, Sun Life’s support can make a big difference.)

A Mission to Educate

Sun Life’s mission with Play for Life: A Game of Choices is clear: make financial literacy accessible and enjoyable. They’re initially focusing on their existing clients, supported by a nationwide network of trained financial advisors. The game launched this year and has already gained traction, with plans to expand through partnerships to reach more people.

Takeaway

Play for Life transforms what could be a dry topic into an engaging, thought-provoking experience. Whether you’re an OFW, a business owner, or someone just starting on their financial journey, the game offers valuable lessons that resonate far beyond the board.

So, next time you sip your coffee, why not mix in a game and a life lesson? You might just come away with more than a caffeine buzz.
