I recently had the incredible opportunity to join the maiden flight from Iloilo to Bangkok (Don Mueang Airport)—a momentous milestone not only for me but also for all travelers from Western Visayas. Thanks to Cebu Pacific’s continued efforts to strengthen its Iloilo hub, Ilonggos can now travel to Thailand faster and more affordably than ever before. This direct Iloilo-Don Mueang route unlocks a world of exciting possibilities, and I was lucky enough to be among the first to experience them.
Thailand is a land of rich culture, vibrant traditions, and incredible sights. Here's a glimpse into some of the must-do experiences that made my trip truly one for the books:
1. Visit The Grand Palace and See the Emerald Buddha
Located in the heart of Bangkok, The Grand Palace is a breathtaking complex that once served as the official residence of Thai kings. With its gilded spires, intricate architecture, and sacred courtyards, the palace embodies the grandeur of Thailand’s royal heritage. One of its most revered sites is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), home to a small but sacred statue of the Buddha carved from a single block of jade. Visiting this spiritual and architectural marvel feels like stepping into a living fairytale of Thai culture and devotion.
2. Marvel at The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho
Just a short walk from the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, home to the famous Reclining Buddha. Stretching 46 meters long, this gold-plated statue represents the passing of the Buddha into Nirvana. Surrounded by intricate murals and serene courtyards, the temple exudes a calming energy that’s perfect for reflection and admiration.
3. Dress Up and Explore Wat Arun
Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. We took the experience a step further by wearing traditional Thai costumes while exploring the temple grounds. With its ornate porcelain details and towering spires, Wat Arun is not just a visual delight—it’s the perfect place to feel like royalty for a day and snap those Insta-worthy shots.
4. Enjoy a Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise
There’s nothing quite like drifting along the Chao Phraya River at night, with Bangkok’s city lights reflecting off the water. The dinner cruise offered a buffet of Thai delicacies, live music, and breathtaking views of riverside landmarks like Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. It was a romantic, relaxing way to end a full day of exploration.
5. Shop at Local Markets
Whether it’s the bustling Chatuchak Weekend Market or the floating markets on the outskirts of the city, shopping in Thailand is an experience on its own. You can find everything from handmade crafts to trendy fashion pieces, not to mention endless rows of street food stalls serving local snacks. It's the perfect place to grab souvenirs and indulge in retail therapy.
6. Visit The Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya
Made entirely of wood and filled with detailed carvings, The Sanctuary of Truth is more than just a structure—it’s a philosophical masterpiece. It blends elements of Buddhism and Hinduism, symbolizing the importance of religion, philosophy, and art in human development. A visit here offers a spiritual and intellectual journey amidst awe-inspiring architecture.
7. Watch the Elephant Show in Nongnooch Pattaya
At the Nongnooch Tropical Garden, we were treated to a vibrant cultural show and an entertaining elephant performance that showcased the intelligence and grace of these gentle giants. The garden itself is a sprawling haven of landscaped beauty, offering an enjoyable combination of nature, tradition, and wildlife.
8. Feast on Thai Delicacies
Thailand is a food lover’s paradise. From the sweet and creamy mango sticky rice to the bold and spicy flavors of pad thai, every meal was a burst of flavor. I also tried tom yum soup, green curry, and freshly grilled seafood from street vendors—each bite was more memorable than the last. Thai food is not just a meal; it’s an experience.
9. Explore the Ancient City of Ayutthaya
A day trip to Ayutthaya transported us back in time to Thailand’s former capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is filled with centuries-old temples, giant Buddha statues, and remnants of palaces. Walking through the ruins while learning about its rich history was one of the most enriching parts of the trip.
10. Wander Through Ancient Siam (Muang Boran)
Often described as the world’s largest outdoor museum, Ancient Siam is a sprawling park that features replicas of Thailand’s most important historical structures. From palaces to temples and floating villages, it offers a condensed yet immersive way to understand the country’s architectural and cultural diversity—all in one place.
