She Left Home to Lift Her Family. Today, She's Serving Filipino Dreams One Cup at a Time

When Ramona Mariano Sotto boarded a plane to Dubai, she wasn't chasing wealth or prestige.

She was chasing possibility.

Like millions of Overseas Filipino Workers, she carried with her a suitcase filled with hopes, responsibilities, and silent sacrifices. As the eldest among her siblings, Ramona had already learned early in life that leadership often begins long before a title is given. After losing their father, she naturally stepped into the role of guiding and helping her family, determined to ensure her younger siblings would have opportunities she had worked so hard to create.

Today, that same woman who once left Angeles City, Pampanga in search of a better future has become not only a respected healthcare executive but also the co-founder of Afford'aCup Restaurant Dubai, a business dedicated to bringing the warmth of Filipino cuisine and hospitality to people from around the world.

Her story proves that sometimes, life's greatest achievements are built not from carefully crafted plans—but from courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family.

From Nurse to Global Leader

Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Angeles University Foundation, Ramona dreamed of building a meaningful career while creating financial stability for those she loved.

The United Arab Emirates represented more than overseas employment. It represented growth.

Her first years in Dubai were spent in the healthcare industry, where every day became an opportunity to learn. Like many OFWs, she experienced homesickness, cultural adjustments, and the challenge of working alongside colleagues from different countries and backgrounds.

Far from home, every unfamiliar situation demanded patience. Every conversation required understanding. Every setback became another lesson in resilience.

Instead of allowing those challenges to discourage her, Ramona embraced them.

Little by little, she developed not only her professional skills but also the leadership qualities that would later define her career.

When Life Writes a Better Story

When Ramona first arrived in Dubai, becoming a business owner wasn't part of the plan.

Her goal was simple: build a stable career and support her family.

But life had bigger plans.

Years of dedication eventually led her to become a General Manager in the healthcare sector, overseeing operations while continuously expanding her knowledge and leadership abilities.

Yet success didn't stop there.

Together with her husband, Cris, and their family, Ramona pursued another dream—opening Afford'aCup Restaurant Dubai, a business born not simply to serve meals, but to serve memories.

For Filipinos living thousands of miles from home, food has a unique way of healing homesickness.

A familiar dish can instantly transport someone back to family gatherings, fiestas, childhood kitchens, and Sunday lunches.

Ramona wanted to create that feeling.

Afford'aCup became more than a restaurant. It became a place where Filipino culture, hospitality, and flavors could be shared with fellow kababayans and introduced to people from every corner of the world.

The Sacrifice That Made Everything Worth It

Every OFW understands the quiet cost of success.

There are birthdays celebrated through video calls.

Family milestones witnessed through photographs.

Moments that can never be replayed.

Ramona experienced all of these.

Leaving behind everything familiar wasn't easy. Building a life in another country required constant adjustment, emotional strength, and the courage to keep moving forward even when home felt impossibly far away.

But every sacrifice carried one purpose—to build a brighter future for her family.

Then came the moment that made every difficult day worthwhile.

Both of her younger siblings successfully finished college and eventually joined her in Dubai to pursue their own careers.

For Ramona, no promotion or business milestone could compare to witnessing her family's dreams finally become reality.

It was proof that every sacrifice had meaning.

Success Measured by Lives Changed

Despite her accomplishments in healthcare and entrepreneurship, Ramona measures success differently.

For her, success isn't defined by job titles or financial achievements.

It's measured by the lives she helps improve.

That philosophy continues to shape everything she does—from leading teams in healthcare to growing a Filipino-owned business that creates opportunities while proudly showcasing Philippine culture abroad.

She hopes Afford'aCup will continue to expand, not simply as a restaurant, but as a bridge connecting cultures through food, hospitality, and shared experiences.

She also dreams of mentoring young professionals, helping future leaders grow while ensuring that generations after her will enjoy even greater opportunities.

A Legacy Beyond Business

Looking back, Ramona realizes that her greatest accomplishment isn't becoming a General Manager.

Nor is it becoming a business owner.

Her greatest achievement is seeing her family thrive because she chose courage over comfort.

She transformed responsibility into purpose.

Sacrifice into opportunity.

Dreams into reality.

For fellow OFWs and Filipinos aspiring to work abroad, her advice remains simple yet powerful:

"Be courageous, patient, and open to learning. Working abroad is not always easy, and there will be challenges, sacrifices, and moments of doubt. However, if you remain focused on your goals, work hard, and continue improving yourself, opportunities will come. Most importantly, never forget your values and where you came from. Stay connected to your family, support your fellow Filipinos, and remember that success becomes even more meaningful when it can be shared with others."

In the end, Ramona's story isn't simply about leaving the Philippines.

It's about carrying the Philippines wherever she goes.

And through every meal served, every opportunity created, and every life she inspires, she continues to prove that the greatest legacy an OFW can leave behind is not found in what they earn—but in the futures they help build.
