‘Everything Will Be Okay’: How Faith Helped This OFW Mom Conquer Life’s Toughest Battles

For many overseas Filipino workers, the dream of working abroad begins with sacrifice. For Katrina Irene II Cauyao, it began with loss—and a leap of faith.

Long before she became a PR and Social Media Specialist in Dubai, Katrina lived a simple life in Pulilan, Bulacan, helping run their family's rice distribution business. It was a livelihood that provided stability and kept her close to home. But when circumstances forced them to close the business they had painstakingly built, she found herself standing at a crossroads.

Instead of allowing setbacks to define her, Katrina chose to see them as an invitation to grow.

“I knew that growth often begins outside our comfort zone,” she recalls.

Armed with courage and driven by her desire to provide a better future for her family, she left the Philippines and embraced the uncertainties of life abroad.

Building a New Life in Dubai

Within just a month of arriving in the UAE, Katrina secured a position as a System Analyst, handling systems connected to Dubai Police services, traffic fines, and Salik transactions. The work demanded precision and technical expertise, but perhaps the bigger challenge was adjusting to a completely new environment while being thousands of miles away from the people she loved.

Yet every struggle became a lesson.

The experience taught her resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuously learning—qualities that would later open doors she never expected.

When Life Surprises You

Katrina never imagined that while building a career in technology, she would also find herself pursuing another dream she had carried since she was a teenager.

It all started with a chance encounter at a fashion show.

Sitting near photographers while watching the event, she was unexpectedly approached and invited to do photoshoots. What began as a simple opportunity soon blossomed into a successful modeling career.

She walked runways wearing elegant gowns and abayas, appeared on a billboard at Oasis Mall in Dubai in 2021, collaborated with various beauty and fashion brands, and eventually became a model for Attar Collection Perfumes.

Looking back, she believes that some of life's most beautiful blessings are the ones we never plan for.

A Mother Before Anything Else

Then came one of the darkest chapters of her life.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Katrina lost her job. Like millions around the world, she faced uncertainty and fear. But even as one door closed, another challenge awaited.

Her son, Zeus Alexander, who was born with Down Syndrome and diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, needed urgent medical attention. He would eventually undergo two angioplasty procedures and two open-heart surgeries.

At that moment, career ambitions faded into the background.

Being a mother became her greatest mission.

Looking back, Katrina believes that losing her job wasn't a punishment—it was God's way of preparing her for a season where her son needed her the most.

“As a mother, nothing mattered more than being by his side,” she says.

Through prayer, faith, and unwavering love, she found the strength to endure.

Faith Through Every Storm

There were also moments when Katrina herself faced health scares. There were times she lost consciousness and felt numbness in her arms.

In one particularly frightening moment, she remembers whispering a prayer:

“Papa God, not now… my family still needs me.”

Despite the fear, she held on to one truth: everything would eventually be okay.

Her relationship with Jesus Christ became her anchor. She learned that some problems cannot be solved by money, and some wounds can only be healed through faith, patience, and surrender.

“Every storm eventually passes,” she says. “Every challenge carries a lesson.”

Success Beyond Awards

Over the years, Katrina earned numerous recognitions. She appeared in magazines, became a brand ambassador, and established herself in both corporate and modeling circles.

But while awards and public recognition brought joy, they were never her greatest accomplishments.

Her proudest achievement was becoming a stronger woman—a professional, an OFW, and above all, a mother who never gave up.

Because for Katrina, success is measured not by titles or material possessions, but by the love and sacrifices made for family.

Dreaming of Becoming “Lola Ganda”

Today, Katrina continues to dream—not only of building her own cleaning company but also of something far more precious.

She dreams of growing old with her loved ones, watching her children build families of their own, and one day meeting her grandchildren.

And when that time comes, she hopes they will call her by a nickname she already treasures in her heart:

“Lola Ganda.”

It may sound simple, but for Katrina, it represents something priceless—a life filled with love, faith, and memories shared with generations to come.

A Message to Fellow OFWs

For Filipinos dreaming of working abroad, Katrina offers a message born from experience:

“Life abroad is never easy. Everyone has different struggles, and you should never compare your journey with someone else’s. Know your strengths, improve your skills, and most importantly, never give up. Hold on to your faith and trust that God has a purpose for every season of your life.”

Because sometimes, life's greatest victories are not found in the plans we make, but in the courage to keep going when everything seems uncertain.

And through every setback, sacrifice, and silent prayer, Katrina Irene II Cauyao has proven that with faith, perseverance, and love, even the most painful chapters can become the beginning of a beautiful legacy.
