Michael John A. Bergado never imagined he'd one day walk through the polished halls of a luxury hotel in Dubai—not as a guest, but as part of the leadership support behind its sales operations.
A decade ago, he was a high school teacher in the Philippines, passionate about educating young people and serving his community. But every payday came with the same sinking feeling.
"My monthly take-home pay was reduced to only ₱1,000 after deductions."
That was all he had left after paying off debts.
"I felt trapped," he says. "I wanted to provide for my family, help my younger brother finish college, and somehow build a better future. But every month, it felt like I was only surviving."
At one point, Michael owed nearly half a million pesos.
"It became one of the most challenging seasons of my life."
Leaving the Philippines wasn't part of a grand plan. It was an act of survival.
But even that didn't come easy.
"Before coming to Dubai, I was offloaded three times."
Each failed attempt chipped away at his confidence. There were moments when he questioned whether he was forcing something that simply wasn't meant for him.
Instead of giving up, he leaned on his wife, his church community, and his faith.
"I always believed God was preparing me for something greater, even if I couldn't see it yet."
Eventually, Dubai opened its doors.
Today, Michael works as a Sales Coordinator at Fairmont The Palm, one of Dubai's premier luxury resorts. His role keeps him at the center of the hotel's commercial operations—coordinating invoices, managing financial reports, assisting VIP reservations, organizing site inspections, and supporting marketing campaigns.
"I manage key administrative functions for the Sales team," he explains. "Every day is different, and that's what I enjoy. You're constantly learning."
While rebuilding his life overseas, Michael discovered the International Marketing Group (IMG), where he began learning about debt management, investing, and financial literacy.
"At first, I just wanted to fix my own finances."
It did more than that.
"Through IMG's training on debt management, money management, investing, and developing a growth mindset, I was able to break free from debt."
The lessons changed the way he looked at money—and eventually, his purpose.
Today, alongside his work at Fairmont, he also serves as a Senior Marketing Director with IMG, helping fellow Filipinos understand personal finance and prepare for the future.
"I want to help Filipinos become financially smart. My dream is that more families retire as winners and become financially sustainable."
For Michael, success isn't measured by the hotel he works in or the title on his business card.
It's knowing he no longer lives in fear of the next payday.
It's being able to help others avoid the mistakes he once made.
And it's proving—to himself most of all—that one difficult season doesn't have to define an entire life.
When asked what he loves most about living abroad, he doesn't mention the skyscrapers or the luxury.
He simply smiles.
"A world full of opportunities."
To fellow Filipinos chasing a better future, his advice is straightforward:
"Start preparing now for the future because time is literally flying so fast. Never stop learning, invest in yourself, and use your job to fund the dreams you're building."
Because sometimes, the person earning only ₱1,000 after deductions isn't at the end of their story.
Sometimes, they're just getting started.
